IP stands for Ingress Protection and is a rating system for the types of environmental protection a device offers. The IP code was originally created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to classify the degree of protection against contact with live parts and protection from the ingress of solid objects. Today, this system is used around the world as a standard measure of the degree of protection provided by a device from the ingress of solid objects and water.
